Dad I’ve developed your eyebrows
Just thought you might like to know
I see them every morning when I put on eye make up
Looking surprised and dishevelled; slightly out of control
Dad I’ve developed your eyebrows
Have you heard of bed hair?
I think it’s the equivalent
Hair does funny things past fifty
Sometimes it disappears
Or develops
A penchant for the colour grey
But sometimes it lets loose
Guys like you would know
Ears and noses – nowhere off limits
Like it realises it’s running out of time to grow
Dad I’ve developed your eyebrows
But it’s not all bad
It gives me an opportunity to remember you
You hung on as long as you could
We knew you couldn’t stay forever
And you had such a head start on life
By the time I came along
I find comfort and joy in the echoes of your life
That smile
That laugh
Hands on hips
A jaunty little dance
To one of your favourite songs
Maybe Dean Martin?
These things bring a smile to my face
Now so it seems will my new eyebrows
But today’s my day off so I don’t care – no mirrors for me
And anyway
Tomorrow is ten years since you left us
A date I could never forget
So I will be remembering every little thing about you –
Eyebrows and all
