On Saturday I attended the home and art studio of Martha Iserman as part of the Dandenong Ranges Open Studios. Nestled on the side of the hill in Belgrave Heights, the home she shares with her husband Chase and their three cats is inviting and bright, and filled with art and the aroma of coffee and baking.
Martha is billed as a science illustrator, working mostly in watercolours. Though in the last year she has picked up oils and her paintings are bright and bold. She has a love for insects and mushrooms, and renders their images with great skill. Her oil paintings can be more whimsical, with broader themes, and are just as delightful.
I came away with the expected sense of awe (I really do love Martha’s art), a belly full of good American coffee, sweet cake and cookies, some pats of Bijou (such a lovely cat), and a handful of print cards.
