I’ve just finished reading A Curiosity of Consequence by our very own MAC author, Kel White, and find myself desperately reluctant to be dragged out of the magical world in which the story is set. I’m hoping the quirky characters and creatures will remain with me, and that Kel’s next book will be published soon. I want to continue the fantastical adventure.
Without giving too much away … the story follows Kjara Chedderheart, a three foot tall haffelin. She’s an unlikely protagonist and a unsuspecting hero. Kjara works on her parent’s farm and has a sassy attitude. A harmless prank leads her to be arrested, detained in the city, and involved in a nefarious plot. All the while questioning why she has spiral marking on her skin that ripple and swirl when she is in danger. Kjara is a loveable character, and the situations she finds herself in are surprising and always full of action.
Written for a YA (young adult) audience, this fifty something loved the adventure, the fantasy, and the enchanted world in which it all takes place. Every night I found myself looking forward to going to bed so I could immerse myself in Kjara’s world. Then bargaining for ‘just one more chapter,’ and then, ‘the next one’s really short,’ before turning off the light.
Kel’s writing is always entertaining and often hilarious. A Curiosity of Consequence is beautifully written and the story keeps you guessing until the end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy, adventure, magic, or reading. The well put together words will transport readers in to another world. I guarantee they will lose themselves completely in this spellbinding story.
