The Lap

Is there anything quite as nice
As sitting comfortably
With a cat on your lap?

That gentle warmth and weight
Pressing you down
Trapping you in place.

The slow in out of their breath
Warm and just slightly damp against your legs
An occasional mew as they dream,
Paws tracking some imaginary chase.

Even that slight prick of an extended claw
Is a welcome sign of their comfort
In your presence.

And, finally, their purr.

That sublime vibration
Sinking deep into your bones
Easing any ache, any care
Lulling you into peace.

No, there’s nothing quite like the feel
Of a contented cat on your lap.
May you ever be so lucky.
