My pattern says there should be 240 stitches by the end of the row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cNobody talk to me for a minute,\u201d I announce, \u201cI\u2019m counting.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Ah, dear. Too late now, I realise I\u2019ve made a school girl error &#8211; never announce your intentions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cOne, two, three, four,\u201d I say under my breath as I crochet the next round, counting each stitch as I go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cGo Bulldogs!\u201d screams the crocodile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<br>Really? What the hell? He doesn\u2019t even go for the bulldogs, why all the enthusiasm now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cEleven, twelve, thirteen.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cWhaaa! Watch it.\u201d That\u2019s Dad, he wasn\u2019t expecting the football in his face from close range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cTwenty three, twenty four.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cPolly scares clumsy moose,\u201d says the unicorn, pleased with herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cBulldogs, Bulldogs, Bulldogs,\u201d sings the crocodile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cEmily walks silly fish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cThat\u2019s random,\u201d says Dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cShe\u2019s playing that word game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>My second mistake, contributing to the auditory chaos and the beginning of the slippery slope of my loss of focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cYeah, random though.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cThirty five, thirty six,\u201d getting louder now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cMum! Mum!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<br>\u201cHang on, thirty nine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Mum! Muuum!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cDo you like their onesies?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cMmm, yeah, forty five.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cMummy!!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cCan you wait a sec, I\u2019m counting?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cSpeccie!!! Go Dogs dogs, dogs doggie dogs!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<br>\u201cSeriously, can you get off my arm please, I can\u2019t crochet with you lying on me. One hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cOK.\u201d The cuddly crocodile moves 3 centimetres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cHave we got any kindling?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cNo, one hundred and oh no, it shouldn\u2019t be an odd number on the chain stitch, I knew I\u2019d lose count.&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m going to my room to count this again. You lot are hopeless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>What\u2019s for dinner? Mum\u2019s Caff?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cNo, Mum\u2019s caff is closed, you are too annoying. You can have stone soup!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cNoooo! Not stone soup!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br><a>The soothing golden light shines into my room. I love this time of day.&nbsp;<\/a>&nbsp;Shadows of my hand dance long on the bed cover.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>OK, so let\u2019s see.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cOne, two, three.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;I take it slowly, and this time use the cute little stitch markers that the unicorn has made for me.<br>Crocheting in bed always seems so indulgent.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I put it in the same category as day drinking.&nbsp;&nbsp;Something that only ever happens when I\u2019m on holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>I can just hear the noise from the living room but it doesn\u2019t distract me now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<br>\u201cOne hundred and ninety eight! What, why?\u201d I say aloud.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is annoying, as it means the error started many rows back.&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m not going to be able to fix it in a hurry, so I sit for a while and watch the changing colours in the sky.&nbsp;&nbsp;I remember my Mother\u2019s voice saying \u201cEveryone get up and look at the sunset.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m tempted to say it myself, but I\u2019ve learnt that I don\u2019t get the response I\u2019m hoping for.&nbsp;&nbsp;I was probably just the same at their age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>When I emerge I\u2019m surprised to find the living room silent and devoid of animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>I sit back down, trying to work out where I went wrong with my stitches.&nbsp;&nbsp;But it\u2019s getting dark, and seems too quiet.&nbsp;&nbsp;I head to the kitchen to open Mum\u2019s Caff, not stone soup after all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<br>It\u2019s our Friday night tradition.&nbsp;&nbsp;If we\u2019re not at the football or at the clubrooms, Mum\u2019s Caff provides the yellow food, so I have a night off cooking and the kids and Dad get to eat junk.&nbsp;&nbsp;But not too bad tonight, it\u2019ll be box lasagne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cMuuuuuuum! How long\u2019s dinner?\u201d Bellowed from several rooms away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cI can\u2019t hear you.&nbsp;&nbsp;Come here and ask me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>A face appears around the corner.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cHow long\u2019s dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cWell, I haven\u2019t measured it but I\u2019d say about a foot.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>I\u2019m hilarious, and also, it seems, turning into my mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cHuh?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;He doesn\u2019t get it, but moves on.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cDo you like my onesie?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cI love it!&nbsp;&nbsp;Do you want to help me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cNah,\u201d he says, and skips off to find some mischief to get up to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Oh well, he\u2019ll be back.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-sitebg-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><br>I switch on the oven and the fluorescent lights overhead.
